TWO PRINTS BY NORTHWEST ARTIST JACOB LAWRENCE STOLEN
Olympia, WA - Two prints by nationally renowned Northwest artist Jacob
Lawrence were stolen from the offices of the Washington State Arts
Commission in the early morning hours of April 9. The missing prints are No.
6 and No. 17 from Lawrence's twenty-two panel series The Life of John Brown.
Lawrence first painted the series The Life of John Brown in 1941. In an
effort to share this work more widely, Lawrence reproduced the series in
screen print form in 1977. This limited edition series is represented in the
Washington State Art Collection.
Lawrence is recognized both regionally and nationally for his sensitive
treatment of American history and for his dedication to teaching artists and
audiences alike. Lawrence settled in Washington in 1971 to teach painting at
the University of Washington, where he mentored hundreds of emerging
artists. An exhibition of his life's work toured museums nationally,
including a 2003 presentation at Seattle Art Museum.
Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of the stolen prints
should call Mark Gerth of the Washington State Arts Commission at (360)
586-8093 or email markg at arts.wa.gov.
