Oslo seeks compensation for stolen art
OSLO, Norway, Apr. 29 (UPI) -- Norway's capital plans to seek more than $100
million in damages from anyone convicted of stealing two paintings if they
are not recovered.
Armed robbers took "The Scream" and "Madonna" from the Edvard Munch Museum
last August. The newspaper Dagbladet reported Thursday that sources in the
underworld say the paintings have been burned, but so far investigators deny
this.
Two people have been arrested, but the paintings are still missing.
Aftenposten said Friday that the City of Oslo wants 700 million kroner
(about $111 million) in compensation.
In related news, the head of the Munch Museum said that the museum wants
paintings to be guarded by armed police escorts during any future moves.
