Subject: Heritage Training Sessions
Dear Friend,
This month, Heritage Watch completed its inaugural series of village
workshops aimed at educating rural communities about the importance of
protecting their local heritage.
Heritage Watch staff spent one week in the northwestern province of Banteay
Meanchey, working with 140 members of the community. Villagers, monks, and
district officials listened to informative talks about the historical,
religious, and economic importance of archaeological sites. Speakers
included Prak Vireak of Heritage Watch, Professor Seng Soth from the Royal
University of Fine Arts, village elders and key religious figures. Much of
the workshop was hands-on, including guided discussions on the importance of
protecting ancient sites, and the many causes of looting.
Most of the villagers attributed looting to ignorance, and felt that local
people who realized the value of their heritage would be less likely to
destroy it. 98% of the participants found the workshops "Very Helpful" and
thought that they would contribute to a decrease in looting.
Due to the success of this project, another series of workshops will begin
next month. These workshops are an important part of Heritage Watch's
national education campaign--by going directly into those communities at
threatened archaeological sites, Heritage Watch is reaching out to potential
looters and educating them about the the importance of protecting the past!
But we can't continue these workshops without your help! You can sponsor a
workshop for $500--which will cover the costs of training materials,
lecturers, venues, and transport to those remote areas of the country where
looting is heaviest. We are also grateful for partial sponsorship.
Attached are photographs of our staff conducting training last month and the
result of looting activities at temples/sites nearby where the training was
conducted.
Please support this important work at www.heritagewatch.org/donate.php.
Should you wish to be removed from this mailing list please write and advise
us and we will do so.
