Subject: Dorothy King's allegations
In her 1/11/04 message Dorothy King alleges that the May 2004 Oxford union
debate on whether or not the Elgin marbles ought to return to the parthenon
'was generally considered to have been rigged' without providing ANY
evidence of such a general opinion, let alone of the debate actually being
rigged.
Indeed, the only people to have made such a claim were Dorothy King herself
(Guardian 11/5/04)and Michael Daley, the Director of ArtWatch UK (same
article), who having accepted an invitation to speak at the debate cancelled
24 hours before it took place. His reasons for doing so were that he had
been asked to present his case alongside students, against a panel of
experts and following the performance of a play he feared would sway the
audience. According to the Guardian article King pulled out for the same
reason.
If they seriously believed that a play which they had neither read nor seen
contained any misinformation or bad arguments that might sway the audience
to vote for the marbles' return, they should have come to the debate to make
their case against it. Unless of course they did not deem themselves to be
'expert'
enough to deal with their oponents, in which case we might wonder how much
faith they have in their own arguments.
