"Økokrim" wants to handle art crimes
Økokrim, Norway's special economic crime unit, wants to be in charge of art
theft investigations, claiming specialist knowledge is needed to tackle such
crimes.
Økokrim (The National Authority for Investigation and Prosecution of
Economic and Environmental Crime in Norway) chief Einar Høgetveit believes
that police don't know enough about such crimes, NRK (Norwegian
Broadcasting) reports.
Investigations are currently divided between 27 police districts, Økokrim
and the National Criminal Investigation Service (NCIS), with no one having
special responsibility.
Økokrim has now requested funds to set up a sorely needed register over
artworks stolen in Norway, and the request is being considered by the
Directorate of Police.
