Woman Arrested at Albuquerque Show
by Alice Kaufman
At the seventh annual Great Southwestern Antiques Show in Albuquerque, New
Mexico, in August, Marilyn F. Romines, a 59-year-old college professor from
Alexandria, Virginia, was arrested after allegedly stealing over $20,000 of
jewelry, silver, kachinas, baskets, and pottery from a number of dealers.
A visitor to the show, Jack Cassin, director of the Weaving Art Museum, told
show promoter Terry Schurmeier that he saw Romines put a piece of Tiffany
silver in her bag. Schurmeier and a female member of Akal Security trapped
the suspect in a restroom until she was arrested by the New Mexico State
Police.
All objects were returned to their rightful owners.
According to an article in the Albuquerque Tribune on August 9, New Mexico
State Police Officer Robert Gibbs found the allegedly stolen items in the
restroom "stashed in a black bag, behind the toilet and in the woman's
undergarments." The Albuquerque Tribune reported that, according to court
records, as of August 9 Romines was being held in the Metropolitan Detention
Center in lieu of $10,000 bond on a second-degree felony charge of
shoplifting in excess of $20,000.
Schurmeier reported that the Great Southwestern Antiques Show was "a
tremendous success and expanded to one hundred eighty booths featuring over
two hundred dealers. Early entry attendance was up by twelve percent. The
sale of two-day passes on Saturday was up twenty percent, meaning more
people were shopping the show on multiple days. Traffic was strong
throughout the show."
