Carved ivory pieces stolen from Lido Key home

SARASOTA -- An Indianapolis man said the thief who stole more than $50,000
worth of artwork from his Lido Key home recently had a good eye.
Danny Marr, 50, said several hand-carved ivory pieces were stolen from his
home between Sept. 30 and Tuesday.
"This is all carved ivory," Marr said. "The one lamp, that's really unique.
Only a discerning eye for art would know that it had value to it."
Marr is offering $10,000 for any information that leads to an arrest.
Marr said the artwork came with the home, which he purchased last week. The
alarm had not been activated and, Marr said, he believes the thief knew the
artwork was there.
The suspect entered through an unlocked sliding glass door, according to a
Sarasota Police Department report.
"This is the first time this has happened," said property manager Jan
Jordan. "It's a very unusual situation."
Jordan said her company frequently checks properties for part-time
residents. An employee of the company reported the burglary, she said.
"We know when something is not in place," Jordan said. "We were shocked and
disappointed."
Marr said he is alerting local and state art dealers to the theft.
The stolen items include:
A large ivory elephant with a woman holding a child riding on top.
Two tall, matching hand-carved ivory women.
Assorted hand-carved ivory figurines.
An ivory teapot with four cups.
A large hand-carved mammoth tusk and stand with Chinese writing at one end.
A frosted lamp with bugs on the shade and base.
Anyone with information can call Detective Pat Robinson at 954-7085.
