Statue by Swedish sculptor Carl Milles stolen from outside hospital
Associated Press
STOCKHOLM, Sweden - Swedish authorities on Thursday asked the public for
help in retrieving a small statue by renowned Swedish sculptor Carl Milles
that was stolen from a hospital.
The bronze statue "Genius," depicting an angel playing a lyre, was stolen in
October from the main entrance of the Sahlgrenska Hospital in Goteborg, the
local government said in a statement.
The statue is 35 inches high and is valued at about $100,000, the county
government of Vastra Gotaland said.
It said it was hoping for tips from the public about the theft, because
police have not been able to trace the culprits.
Milles, who died in 1955, is one of Sweden's most acclaimed sculptors and
his statues can be seen around the world. He spent much of his career in the
United States, and became an American citizen in 1945.
His most famous works include the "Poseidon" statue in central Goteborg, the
"Meeting of the Waters" in St. Louis and the "Indian God of Peace" in St.
Paul, Minn.
Many of his works are on display at the Millesgarden museum just outside
Stockholm.
